BellSouth's Cellemetry® Data Service Recognized at CTIA's Wireless Apps Show

SEATTLE - (OCT. 27, 1997) - Products using BellSouth's Cellemetry® Data Service were two of the three finalists recognized as outstanding wireless data software applications today in the APPY Awards held during the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association's (CTIA) Wireless Apps '97 trade show in Seattle.

The first application recognized, Wireless Data Concepts' Orion application, uses Cellemetry Service to remotely monitor stand-by power supply units commonly used by cable television companies. Teledyne Brown's Carina Information System, the second application recognized, allows the remote collection of billing information from individual utility meters, monitors changes in critical conditions, and notifies system administrators of instrument failure or system tampering.

Cellemetry Data Service, a patented wireless technology developed by BellSouth, enables equipment to be remotely monitored by using the existing cellular network's control channels. Cellemetry Service plugs into a cellular carrier's existing network without requiring any modifications, providing low installation costs. Users are able to customize the system according to their needs. It can be incorporated anywhere and at as many points on a service system as needed without additional structural build-outs.

"This award demonstrates the value Cellemetry Service can provide to a business' productivity and communications infrastructure," said Ed Comer, director of the Cellemetry Business Unit at BellSouth. "Cellemetry Service is the only service that transmits messages over a cellular network without having any impact whatsoever on the network's voice channels, allowing cellular carriers to easily expand their portfolio of services."

Launched last year, CTIA's APPY awards program recognizes leading edge developments in the wireless data industry. Awards are given to cutting-edge companies who take current technology to the highest level. Winners demonstrate a unique commitment to enhancing business efficiency, broadening the wireless marketplace and bettering communications within communities. This year, awards were presented for hardware, software and end-user applications.

Since the introduction of Cellemetry Data Service in early 1996, BellSouth has signed contracts to provide Cellemetry Service to cellular carriers in North America representing over 130 million potential customers (POPs). Carriers include AirTouch-Eastern Region, BellSouth Cellular Corp, Bell Mobility (Canada), CommNet, Frontier Cellular, Kansas Cellular, Rural Cellular, Sygnet, US WEST NewVector Group and Vanguard Cellular.

BellSouth is a $19 billion communications services company. It provides telecommunications, wireless communications, directory advertising and publishing, video, Internet and information services to more than 28 million customers in 20 countries worldwide.
